Every month, I will feature a beer of the month, since it turns out I like beer – I thought I didn’t until I started drinking the good stuff, i.e. craft beer. For this inaugural post I am featuring one of my favorite beers from what I’d have to say is my favorite brewery. Drum roll please…and the winner is, Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale.
I think Lagunitas is my favorite brewery, not because they make my favorite beer (no, that would be La Chouffe), but because they make the most collectively great beers. In fact, I don’t think I’ve had a bad Lagunitas beer. Ironically though, most of the beers they produce are not a style that I typically like, which must speak volumes about the quality of beer they make. Oh, plus their packaging gets me. It’s tongue and cheek and so clever – I love reading their labels (read one and you’ll know).
Oh yeah, back to the beer…This beer is a limited edition release and is a take on another Lagunitas beer, Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, which was also at one time a limited edition release. Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ was such a success that it is now made year round and I’m hoping the same thing happens with Little Sumpin’ Wild. For now though, I’ll just have to hoard it when it comes out and reserve it to drink throughout the year. Technically, this beer came out in July, 2012, but it is still on the shelves in stores near me, so you too might be able to find it and begin hoarding it like me.
This is described as a Belgian ale, but isn’t as sweet as a regular Belgian and is darker and tastes more beer like, or what some beer folk might describe as hoppy. Though it is still a bit sweet, which makes it incredibly easy to drink. Be warned though, this stuff packs a punch at 8.7% alcohol, so sip slowly and savor it while it’s still in supply.
So every month, I will feature a beer of the month. Stay tuned for what’s up next.
