Becoming a member of a museum in your city is a great way to not only support culture, the arts and science in your community, but also have some guaranteed interesting, enlightening and fun social engagements year round. Even better is also getting your friends to become members with you so they can join you at these social engagements.
Los Angeles (where I live) has an abundance of museums (and your town or city probably does too) and over the course of the last couple of years I have joined the Natural History Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (aka LACMA). Both, like many other museums, have a variety of events throughout the course of the year and often have special “member only” events. Membership dues are often modest too, in the $50 to $100 range for the year, and sometimes even tax deductible.
For example, the Natural History Museum that I belong to, hosts First Fridays, a monthly Friday night concert at the museum, which is free with your $40 a year membership (that’s a pretty great deal in my book). There is really nothing better than seeing an indie rock band perform in the mammal hall in front of the water buffalo exhibit with a cocktail in your hand. My friends have also become members too and I love knowing that we have a once a month date where we are guaranteed to have some fun and see something cool.
Ok, that’s the end of my pitch. Now go out and find some culture and bring your friends too.
